Here is a fine example of a carpoid. This primitive echinoderm is Castericystis vali from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. Carpoids are extremely unusual echinoderms and quite rare in the fossil record. This specimen exhibits excellent detail. The long stele is wonderfully preserved to the tiny tip and tightly articulated with the theca. The plates of the theca are ornamented with tiny granules, and the lone arm (typical of carpoids) is easily seen. The black fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. It is well presented on the somewhat rectangular plate of shale. This is a fine specimen of this uncommon echinoderm from the Cambrian.
