Here are two nice cystoids from the Silurian of Indiana. These are Holocystites scutellatus from the Osgood Formation. The cystoids are inflated and exhibit fine detail. The extremely pustulose plates are well defined. The short, complete stems are still attached to the thecas. Usually these are broken off or not preserved. The cystoid on the left has a nice encrusting bryozoa on the top of the theca. The cream-colored cystoids contrast nicely with the gray matrix. These extinct echinoderms are well presented on the rounded plate of limestone. This is a very displayable plate of cystoids from the Silurian.
