Here is a superb specimen of a stromatolite. This is Conophyton garganicum australe from the Precambrian of Australia. This stromatolite is reported to be over 1 billion years old! Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae. This large chunk of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side, and the layered depositional pattern is wonderfully displayed, even on the naturally rounded exterior of the specimen. The creamish-pinkish-red coloration of the mineral replacement is quite striking. This is a gorgeous stromatolite from the Bangemall Basin of Australia.
