Here is a very interesting fossil coral. This is Favosites placenta from the Silurian of Tennessee. This tabulate coral consists of tightly packed corallites with thin walls and resembles a honeycomb. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits great detail - the individual corallites are quite distinct. Both sides of the coral display well, and the point of attachment (on the other side) is easily seen. A section of crinoid stem is tightly adhered to one corner of the coral. This is a fine example of a fossil coral from the Brownsport Formation.
