This is a great specimen of one of the most desirable ammonites from the United States. It is a large Placenticeras meeki from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This ammonite is characterized by having broad, convex, nearly unornamented flanks and smooth venter. This disc-shaped ammonite has a very narrow, flat keel. The outer shell has been removed from the front side of the ammonite to display the beautiful suture pattern of the cephalopod. The white sutures contrast strikingly with the dark-colored ammonite. The Placenticeras is beautifully showcased, perched high upon the large block of natural matrix. This is a museum quality specimen of Placenticeras meeki from South Dakota.
