This is a very interesting fossil echinoderm. It is a nice specimen of Gogia spiralis from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. This cystoid exhibits wonderful detail. The elongate, multi-plated, sac-like holdfast is intact and very distinct. The large-plated, nodose calyx is quite evident, and the twisted, spiraled arms are beautifully displayed in a splayed position. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is well presented on the somewhat rectangular plate of shale. This is a fine example of this very old echinoderm.
