This is a beautiful fossil sponge, Diagonella sp., from the Marjum Formation of Utah. This type of sponge has also been found in the famous Burgess Shale deposits. Sponges are extremely uncommon in the fossil record. Cambrian sponges apparently had skeletal nets that were weakly united and generally required quiet water for preservation. This specimen is quite large for the type, and the urn-shaped form of the sponge is very distinct. The fossil has beautiful orange coloration and striking contrast. The sponge is wonderfully showcased on the rectangular plate of shale that also contains a complete Agnostid trilobite. This is a superb example of a fossil sponge from the Cambrian.
