This is a beautiful specimen of a stromatolite. This is Conophyton sp. from the Precambrian of Bolivia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae. It is believed that this stromatolite is 2.2 to 2.4 billion years old! The large slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The layered depositional pattern of the stromatolite is wonderfully displayed. The different colors and unique pattern make for a striking specimen. This is a classic example of a stromatolite from an unusual location.
