Here is an excellent specimen of a Middle Cambrian cystoid. This is a Gogia juvalorum from the Antimony Canyon, Utah. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. The preservation of this primitive echinoderm is just wonderful. The elongate, multi-plated, tail-like holdfast is very distinct, and the large-plated, ornate calyx is extremely detailed. The long, segmented arms are beautifully displayed in a widely splayed position. The large cystoid has great color and contrast and is nicely showcased on the natural matrix plate. This is a very detailed specimen of this rare, primitive echinoderm from the Spence Shale.
