Here is a very interesting fossil crustacean. This is Macrophthalmus latreillei from the Pleistocene of Australia. This crab is 3-dimensionally preserved in a concretionary matrix and exhibits excellent detail. The top of the carapace is covered with a multitude of small granulations. The underside of the carapace has the plate structure clearly defined. Many of the legs are intact - the legs are lined, on both margins, with sharp spikes. This is a very detailed example of a fossil crab from "Down Under".
