This is a very special insect fossil. It is a large Stenophlebia sp., a dragonfly, from the famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. This site is known the world over for the fine preservation of the fossils that are occasionally unearthed, and a complete dragonfly is one of the most sought-after types from this locality.

This large dragonfly was fossilized in the classic ''spread wings'' pose, revealing the very delicate venation of the wings. The insect exhibits very fine detail - the head, segmented body, and tail palps are all easily seen. But the feature that makes this specimen stand head and shoulders above other fossil dragonflies is that both halves of the split pair are intact and offered together! Usually, one half is much more distinct than the other, and is then prepared as a single. It is a rare occurrence indeed to have both halves, part and counterpart, of a dragonfly fossil this complete and this detailed! This is easily one of the most collectible and displayable fossils of any type that we have ever had.
