This is a very displayable specimen of Onychaster sp., a rare starfish from the Mississippian of Indiana. This starfish is EXTREMELY inflated and exhibits excellent detail - even the tube feet of the starfish are easily seen. The body of the starfish is quite evident, and the long arms curl downward is a grasping pose. There are also three different crinoids on the same plate (Hylodecrinus, Pachylocrinus, and Scytalocrinus). These crinoids are well preserved and have good plate structure. All of these fossils are natural to the plate - no compositing or placement of specimens has taken place. The echinoderms are aesthetically spaced on the rectangular matrix plate. This is a fabulous specimen of this rare starfish that just happens to be associated with three different crinoids!
