This is a great fossil cephalopod. It is a complete Compressus say (Baculite) from South Dakota. Baculites are straight ammonites, with similar chambers and sutures. This specimen is complete from the tip to the living chamber. The baculite showcases its intricate suture pattern beautifully. The fossil was prepared with both ends free-standing for optimal display. The ends of the baculite are a natural brown color, while the middle is naturally yellow! The cephalopod is perched atop a large chunk of dense Pierre Shale. This is a very collectible example of a complete baculite fossil with its detailed suture pattern preserved.
