This is a complete fossil starfish. It is an Urasterella asperula from the Devonian of Germany. Since the quarries in this area have closed, the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections - this is one of those specimens. The starfish has all five arms intact and exhibits great detail. The individual plates of the starfish are clearly defined. The fossil has been replaced by iron pyrite, or ''fool's gold''. The starfish is nicely showcased on the large (4.5" X 5.6") plate of matrix. This is a very nice starfish from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world.
