This is a very unusual ammonite. It is a fine specimen of Asteroceras sp. from the Jurassic of England. Usually, this type of ammonite is polished to reveal its unusual white coloration and obvious suture pattern - this specimen has been left natural. This ammonite is very 3-dimensional and exhibits very coarse ribbing. The fossil has a somewhat greenish color and contrasts well with the brownish limestone matrix. The ancient cephalopod is beautifully perched atop the block of matrix which has been sawed flat on the bottom for optimal display. But the most striking feature of this ammonite is that the long living chamber has been opened revealing a beautiful pocket of white calcite crystals! This unusual preservation makes this specimen a fabulous showcase piece. This is an extremely displayable example of this classic English ammonite.
