Here is a very nice fossil cephalopod. This is Hoploscaphites from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type has many ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on either side. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. Almost all of the iridescent nacre is still present, and a many beautiful colors are displayed. The ammonite is wonderfully perched on a large block of concretionary matrix that also contains other fossil remains. This is a very displayable example of Hoploscaphites from the Cretaceous
