Here is a good specimen of a primitive echinoderm. This is a Pleurocystites squamosus cystoid from the Ordovician layers of Ontario, Canada. The theca of this cystoid has good shape. The large plates defining the border are nicely articulated. Part of the rapidly-tapering stem is intact and tightly attached to the theca. The base of both arms is also present. The cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the grey matrix. The cystoid is well positioned on the squared plate of limestone. This is a nice example of this unusual Ordovician echinoderm.
