This is an extremely interesting fossil specimen. It is a multiple plate of Camptostroma roddyi from the Kinzers Formation of Pennsylvania. Camptostroma is one of the earliest known types of echinoderms. Found in the Lower Cambrian, this Medusa-like animal had a very distinct plate structure. Examples of Camptostroma are extremely rare, and a multiple specimen is even more scarce. These highly uncommon fossils have good form and, under magnification, the plate structure is easily seen. This specimen has both part and counterpart present, which is also quite unusual. The fossils have great color and contrast and are nicely positioned on the plates of shale. This is a wonderful multiple example of this very primitive echinoderm from the early part of the fossil record.
