This is a spectacular ammonite fossil. It is a very large Speetoniceras versicolor from the Cretaceous of Russia. This type of ammonite has strong ribs that bifurcate near the rounded keel. This cephalopod is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The ribbing pattern of the cephalopod is quite evident, and the extremely tiny, inner whorls of the ammonite are easily seen. The original white outer shell of the ammonite is still intact, which is extremely unusual. The ammonite contrasts beautifully with the sculpted block of concretionary matrix. This is a fantastic display specimen of a Cretaceous ammonite that could easily be the centerpiece of any ammonite collection.
