This is a wonderful specimen of Ecphora gardnerae from the Miocene of Maryland. This type of gastropod has been officially designated as the ''State Fossil of Maryland''. This 3-dimensional fossil has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. The ornate gastropod is extremely well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The broad ornamental ridges that encircle the fossil snail are intact and clearly defined. The aperture of the gastropod is very ''clean'', and the fine growth lines are easily seen. This is a great example of this beautiful gastropod from the St. Mary's Formation.
