This is one of the rarest types of echinoderms found in the fossil record. It is Cothurnocystis bifida, a Stylophoran, from the House Range of Utah. These animals were extremely primitive echinoderms related to cystoide and carpoids. This specimen is complete, with the tail pointed downward. The plate structure is nicely intact, which is almost never preserved. The striking orange coloration contrasts beautifully with the light grey plate of shale. This is easily one of the best examples of a cyclocystoid we have ever had.
