This is a very detailed vertebrate fossil. It is a complete Mesosaurus braziliensis from from Southern Brazil. Mesosaurs had slim bodies, powerful tails, and were probably fish eaters. Most fossilized remains of Mesosaurs are very incomplete or heavily restored. This specimen is essentially complete, with the head, body, limbs, and tail intact (a small amount of restoration is present, mainly in the digits). The Mesosaur was preserved in a very aesthetic pose, and displays beautifully on the rectangular plate of matrix. The natural dark brown color of the reptile contrasts beautifully with the cream colored rock. This is a very complete and displayable example of this primitive reptile from the Paleozoic Era.
