Here is a very interesting echinoid. This is Heliophora orbicularis from the Miocene of Morocco. This ovate echinoid is somewhat flattened in shape, like a sand dollar. It has a very unique, coarsely fringed, or ''notched'', border on half of the test. This is completely natural and is one of the diagnostic traits for the species - this specimen exhibits this characteristic beautifully. The plate structure of the sea urchin is clearly defined. The petaloid ambulacra are wonderfully displayed, and the mouth and anal opening (on the other side) are easily seen. This is a fine example of this distinctive echinoid.
