Here is a very special fossil. This is Hybonoticeras hybonotum from the world-famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. This specimen was recently acquired from an old German collection and it still has the original collection label on the back of the plate. The Solnhofen Limestone is very well known for the exquisite preservation of fossils. This specimen is very unusual in that the phosphatic aptychus or operculum of the cephalopod is beautifully preserved on the plate. An ammonite from this location is unusual enough, but to have the aptychus preserved alongside the ammonite is almost beyond belief. This extremely rare specimen is wonderfully centered on the squared plate of lithographic limestone. This fabulous fossil is a "must" for the serious ammonite collector.
