This is a very large example of a Lebanese shrimp. This is Carpopenaeus callirostris from the Cretaceous of Hajoula, Lebanon. Due to political unrest, specimens from this site are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This shrimp is nicely preserved and exhibits fine detail. The head, segmented body, and tail of the shrimp are clearly defined - even the long legs and antennae are quite evident. The fossil has been darkened for contrast (typical of this site) and is well centered on the rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone. There is also a complete fossil fish on the back side of the plate! This is a very attractive fossil shrimp from the Middle East.
