This is a very unusual specimen of a fossil shrimp. This is Paleosculda sp., a mantis shrimp, from the Cretaceous of Lebanon. Due to political unrest, specimens from this site are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This shrimp is beautifully preserved and exhibits amazing detail. The head, segmented body, and tail of the shrimp is clearly defined - even the front appendages are quite evident. The fossil is wonderfully showcased on the rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone. This is one of the best fossil mantis shrimp we have ever seen.
