This is a great specimen of one of the most desirable ammonites from the United States. This is Placenticeras meeki from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This ammonite is characterized by having broad convex, nearly unornamented flanks and smooth venter. This disc-shaped ammonite has a very narrow, flat keel. The outer shell has been removed from the front side of the ammonite to display the beautiful suture pattern of the cephalopod. The white suture pattern contrasts beautifully with the dark ammonite. The cephalopod is well perched on the block of natural matrix. This is a very fine specimen of Placenticeras meeki from South Dakota.
