Here is a very large ammonite from an unusual location. This is Gymnites incultus from the Triassic of Greece. Triassic cephalopods are not common in the fossil record - there are only a few places in the world where they are found. This type of ammonite has a very smooth shell and a narrow keel. This large specimen is quite 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is easily seen. The black ammonite sits on a block of the reddish limestone in which it was found. Also, there other ammonite pieces preserved on the plate. This is a very collectible specimen of unusual Triassic ammonites.
