Here is a very unusual fossil urchin. This is Clypeaster gippslandicus from the Miocene of Australia. This specimen was acquired from a very old collection. This strange echinoid is inflated in the middle and flattens out at the edges. The urchin exhibits very fine detail - the petaloid ambulacra are very well defined. The test of the echinoid is entirely covered with fine ornamentation. This is a fine example of this interesting sea urchin from Down Under.
