This is a large ammonite from the famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. This is one of the most famous fossil sites in the world - well noted for the fine preservation of the fossils attained by the lithographic limestone. Many types of fossils have been found at this site, although ammonites are quite uncommon. The ribbing pattern of this ammonite is clearly defined, and the whorling of the cephalopod is quite evident. The ammonite is wonderfully perched on the large block of limestone that also contains many beautiful pyrolusite dendrites (pseudofossils). This is a very displayable ammonite from this renowned location.
