Here is an extremely aesthetic fossil starfish. This is Urasterella asperula from the Devonian of Germany. Since the quarries in this area have closed, the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This specimen was recently acquired from an old German collection. It would be hard to imagine a specimen of this type prettier than this one. This excellent starfish exhibits amazing detail - all five arms are complete and beautifully displayed, and the plate structure of the echinoderm is clearly defined and even the small spines and tube feet of the animal can be seen. The preservation is so spectacular that the starfish was photographed with two different lighting techniques to showcase the incredible detail. This is simply an extraordinary fossil starfish from a world-renowned site.
