This is a very unusual Devonian fossil. It is a primitive cystoid, Rhenocystis lapendulata, from the famous Bundenbach Slate of Germany. The quarry where this specimen was found used to mine roofing slate for decades, but is now shut down - the only way to obtain the unique fossils from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This cystoid has a long theca with very good plate structure preserved. The cystoid has both long arms intact, and a small stem is still attached to the body of the echinoderm. The fossil is replaced with iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'' and is beautifully showcased on the large, squared plate of roofing slate. This is an excellent example of this rare echinoderm from a classic fossil location.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
