This is a very rare fossil. It is a large Camptostroma roddyi from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Camptostroma are one of the earliest known types of echinoderms. Found in the Lower Cambrian, these Medusa-like animals had a distinct plate structure and an unusual red coloration. This specimen is no different. The orange-red fossil contrasts well with the lighter-colored matrix. The plate structure is easily seen under magnification. There is also an Olenellus cephalon preserved on the plate, showing that the fossil is indeed Lower Cambrian in age. Incredibly, there is also a Salterella salteri on the plate, which is an enigmatic cone shaped animal with uncertain affinities. This is a very unique fossil of three different, very rare Lower Cambrian animals (counterpart is not pictured, but is included).
