This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare fossil starfish. It is a large Hyconosoma opitzki from the renowned Bundenbach slate of Germany. For many years, this slate was quarried for use in the roofing industry. Since the quarries have closed, the only way to acquire specimens is from old collections - this specimen IS from an old German collection. Complete starfish are rare in the fossil record, and examples this large and displayable are almost unheard of. This specimen is wonderfully preserved - the central disc is incredibly detailed and the individual plates of the arms are clearly defined. The starfish is so pristine, it almost appears to be floating on top of the rock. The fossil has been replaced by iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'' and is beautifully displayed in the center of the slate slab almost an inch thick. And this type of starfish is so rare, it isn't even listed in the ''Bundenback Book''! This is a textbook example of a screamin' rare starfish from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world.
