Here is a gorgeous specimen of an ornate echinoid. This is Phymosoma texanum from the Cretaceous of Texas. This echinoid is very 3-dimensional and exhibits excellent detail. The plate structure is just incredible. Under magnification, each plate displays a rugose, or striated, surface. This sea urchin displays the ambulacra beautifully and has rows of prominent tubercles on each side of the ambulacra. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well presented on the natural block of matrix. This is a wonderful example of Phymosoma from Texas.
