This is a rare arthropod fossil. It is a Leanchoilia illecebrosa from the famous Chengjiang locality in China. This site is known worldwide for soft-body preservation of Lower Cambrian animals. The fauna is very similar to the Burgess Shale, but it is OLDER! Many one-of-a-kind organisms have been described exclusively from this formation.
This type of arthropod (Leanchoilia) is also found in the Burgess Shale. This specimen has great natural red coloration, which contrasts strikingly with the light tan matrix. The definitive segmentation of this animal is beautifully preserved in this example. The organism is well centered on the squared, unbroken block of shale. This is a very collectible arthropod from one of the most famous invertebrate fossil localities in the world.
