This is an excellent fossil nautiloid. It is a Cymatoceras sakalavus from the Cretaceous of Madagascar. This extremely robust cephalopod has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. The primitive, straight-line sutures define this fossil as a nautiloid rather than an ammonite. The coiling pattern of the nautiloid is easily seen, and the individual body chambers are quite distinct. The cephalopod has been highly polished on all sides, and the golden coloration makes for a spectacular display. This is a stunning specimen of an ancient nautiloid from the Cretaceous.
