Here is a huge specimen of a very rare cystoid. This is Callocystites jewetti from the Silurian of New York. This cystoid is extremely large for the type. It is very inflated and exhibits incredible detail. The highly ornamented plates are beautifully articulated. The ambulacra are quite evident, and two of the pore rhombs are easily seen. The lengthy stem is still tightly attached to the cystoid - which is unusual. The fossil has excellent color and contrast and is beautifully displayed on the natural plate of shale. This is, perhaps, the largest single example of this scarce cystoid we have ever seen. It is a spectacular and highly displayable example of this primitive echinoderm.
