Here is a very rare echinoderm. It is an Unidentified Edrioasteroid from the Mississippian of Illinois. Edrioasteroids were primitive echinoderms which consisted of a flexible theca composed of numerous polygonal plates. This large edrioasteroid exhibits fine detail - the outer ring of small plates is intact and nicely displayed, and many of the ambulacral plates are well defined. The fossil has very good color and contrast and sits on a large crinoid stem that is well centered on the squared block of matrix. This is a fine example of an edrioasteroid from the Mississippian - one of two(?) complete edrios ever found in the Warsaw Formation!
