Here is a rare US echinoderm. It is a Lepidocidaris shumardiana from the Mississippian of Illinois. This specimen was found years ago and was recently acquired from an old collection. The fossil sea urchin exhibits fine detail - the outer ring of small plates is intact and nicely displayed, and the spine attachment points are very easily seen. The fossil is extremely inflated and is well centered on the squared block of matrix. This is a very collectible example of a Mississippian echinoid from the Warsaw Formation!
