Here is a wonderful specimen of a rare Silurian starfish. It is an unidentified starfish from the Rochester Shale of New York. Thin-armed starfish are quite uncommon in the fossil record due to the delicate nature of the arms. Not only is this a rare fossil, it is also an extremely attractive specimen. The five thin arms are splayed out to create the beautiful display. The distinct structure of this unusual echinoderm is clearly defined. The fossil has good color and contrast and is well centered on the semi-squared plate of shale. This is a great example of this rare fossil starfish from the Silurian of New York - one of the most complete examples of this type we have ever seen.
