This is a rare pair of fossil cephalopods. These are Gymnites incultus and an unidentified cephalopod from the Triassic of Greece. Triassic cephalopods are not common in the fossil record - there are only a few places in the world where they are found. This Gymnites ammonite has been polished to reveal the striking color and wonderful suture pattern. Polished specimens are prized - most ammonites from this locality do not take a polish. The large straight cephalopod is very unusual - the few straight cephalopods from this locality that we have seen are very thin and taper only slightly. This specimen widens out dramatically into an obvious horn shape - this is the only example like this that we have seen. And to be preserved on the same block with an excellent polished Gymnites is unique, to say the least. This is a collectible and displayable specimen of two very different Triassic cephalopods from Greece.
