Here is a very large and beautiful stromatolite specimen from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This stromatolite has been estimated to be well over a billion years old! This block has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The layered mineral replacement is clearly defined - the reddish-black lines of jasper and hematite combined with the golden bands of tigereye make for a breathtaking display. This is a fabulous example of this extremely colorful stromatolite from ''Down Under''.
