Here is a very rare fossil starfish. This is Onychaster sp. (?) from the Warsaw Formation of Illinois. The pocket in which this specimen was found has been dug out, and the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This specimen was recently acquired from an old collection. This starfish is nicely inflated and exhibits wonderful detail. The plate structure of the echinoderm is clearly defined. The starfish is well centered on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very nice example of a rare starfish from the Warsaw Formation.
