This is a very interesting stromatolite slab from the Precambrian of Tasmania. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This striking slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the different shades of the mineral replacement are quite noticeable. This is a very unusual example of this uncommon stromatolite from Down Under. (This is probably the last example of this stromatolite that we will be able to acquire.)
