Name:

This is one of the best multiple specimens of Cryptoblastus melo that we have ever seen. This specimen is from the Mississippian of Missouri. There are 23 Cryptoblastus blastoids on the plate along with a brachiopod and numerous crinoid fragments. This is not an uncommon blastoid, but a plate like this is very exceptional. This is a natural assemblage - no compositing or adding of specimens has been done. The melon-shaped blastoids are inflated and exhibit fine detail. The plate structure is well defined and the thin ambulacra are easily seen. The white fossils contrast nicely with the yellowish-orange matrix. The blastoids are randomly positioned on the rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very displayable plate of Cryptoblastus melo from the Lower Burlington Formation.
