Here is an excellent specimen of Archimedes sp. from the Mississippian of Illinois. This unusual, corkscrew-shaped bryozoan is quite unique - found only in the Mississippian Deposits of North America! This long colony of bryozoans is extremely 3-dimensional and has been prepared in high relief. The white fossil contrasts wonderfully with the greenish-grey matrix. The screw is beautifully showcased on the large, rounded plate of limestone. This is a very displayable example of this strange organism from Illinois.
