This is a very interesting multiple ammonite specimen. These ammonites are Garantiana garantiana from the Jurassic of France. Most fossils in the world are preserved by calcium carbonate. The fossils from this location are replaced by silica - resulting in extremely detailed preservation. The matrix is carefully etched away with acid until the fossils are well exposed. There are at least three complete and two partial specimens of this ammonite preserved on the block of matrix. (Only one complete specimen can be seen in the picture.) The fossils are very 3-dimensional and exhibit fine detail. The inner whorls of the ammonites are easily seen. The ribbing pattern is prominently displayed. This is a very detailed specimen of silicified ammonites from France.
