Here is a great vertebrate fossil with a tale to tell. This is a large Bison priscus jaw from the Ice Age of Siberia. Six beautiful teeth are still firmly embedded in the jaw of this extinct buffalo. The teeth show very little wear and the enamel is wonderfully displayed. But here is the most interesting part of the story. This jaw was extensively gnawed on by a rodent or other animal prior to fossilization! If you look closely, there are numerous gnaw marks on the left side of the jaw, but they could not penetrate the outer bone. Then they moved to the right side and broke through the bone and exposed the marrow treasure trapped within. The cut marks are quite distinct and very easily seen. In fact, the cuts could easily have been made by an Early Human's scraper! This is a very unusual fossil that shows evidence of ancient scavengers - what a conversation piece!
