Here is an extremely uncommon fossil. This is a rare Trachytheutis lebanotica squid from the famous Cenomanian sublithographic limestone of Lebanon. Due to political unrest, specimens from this location are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Squid are incredibly rare in the fossil record, probably due to the absence of hard parts, which are more easily fossilized than soft tissue. The Lebanese Limestone Quarries are world-famous for the exquisite preservation of their fossils, especially the fish and shrimp. This fossil squid is easily seen on the large, semi-rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone. The phragmacone and soft body tissue (tentacles!) are very nicely displayed (much better in person than in the photo). This is a very fine example of a fossil squid with tentacles and ink pouch preserved.
